After the fall of the Soviet Western and Reserve armies, the 3rd and 4th Panzer Gruppen were free to traverse the Bryansk Pocket, cruelly encircling the city of Vyazma with unfaltering blitzkrieg tactics. While the remaining forces of the Soviet 19th, 20th, 24th and 32nd were arming defences on the eastern side of the city, in preparation, the German spearhead arrived at the west, unchallenged.
